Black Cake  - A Comprehensive Summary

Byron and Benny, two brothers who have been estranged for six years, are brought back together at their mother's lawyer's office for the reading of her will after her death. Benny had been separated from the family since 2010 when she came out as bisexual to her family. Their father, Bert Bennett, passed away a few years later, and Benny was unable to reconcile with them before his death. As they listen to a tape that their mother, Eleanor, recorded before her death, they learn about a half-sister they never knew they had.
The recording tells the story of Covey, a girl growing up in the Caribbean in the 1950s. Covey and her best friend, Bunny, were both passionate swimmers, while Covey's mother, Mathilda, ran a bakery with the help of her mother's assistant, Pearl. Covey's father, Lin, was a gambler, and his addiction destroyed the family's finances and drove Mathilda away. When Covey turns 16, she falls in love with Gibbs Grant, a surfer, and the two plan to leave the islands together. However, Lin's financial troubles lead him to borrow from an unscrupulous loan shark named "Little Man" Henry, who eventually focuses his attention on Covey. Lin's dependence on Little Man leads him to consent to a marriage between Covey and Little Man, something Covey is passionately against.
As the wedding approaches, Pearl poisons the top tier of the cake and decorates it with lilac flowers, which Covey detests, to let her know. During the toasts, Little Man chokes and dies, and Covey disappears. She eventually finds Pearl, who gives her money left to her by her mother and contact information for someone who can help her escape off the island. Covey ends up in London, living as Coventina Brown and working as a nanny. She eventually becomes Eleanor Bennett. In the islands, it is believed that Covey killed her husband and escaped. In the recording, Eleanor's mother emphasizes that she is Covey and that the story she told them about growing up in an orphanage is a lie she took from someone else.
