Beschreibung

"Three of Them" ("Трое" or "Troe" in Russian) is a short story written by Maxim Gorky, first published in 1900. It is one of the earliest works by Gorky and is often considered a precursor to his later more mature writings.

In "Three of Them," Gorky explores themes of poverty, desperation, and the human condition. The story follows three destitute individuals—a man, a woman, and a child—as they wander the streets of a Russian city, struggling to survive. Despite their dire circumstances, the trio finds solace in each other's company, forming a makeshift family unit bonded by their shared hardships.

Through vivid descriptions and poignant characterization, Gorky portrays the harsh realities of life for the urban poor in late 19th-century Russia. He highlights the resilience and resourcefulness of his characters, as well as the deep bonds of human connection that endure even in the most desperate of circumstances.

"Three of Them" is notable for its compassionate portrayal of marginalized individuals and its exploration of the human capacity for empathy and solidarity. It foreshadows many of the themes and concerns that would come to define Gorky's later works, cementing his reputation as one of Russia's foremost literary voices of social conscience.
