The central idea of the book is that one need not look elsewhere for opportunity, achievement, or fortune; the resources to achieve all good things are present in one's own community. The book shows how being honest and helping others helps us achieve great fortunes, even monetarily.
The key to success:
1. Prosper where you are (there is a veritable gold mine where you are NOW, find it).
2. Great men are often plain men. Greatness does not come by gaining some "important" office.
3. Figure out what people want and then give it to them.
