The "She Stoops to Conquer" is a comedy drama by Oliver Goldsmith. The play is both a satire on the upper class and their pretensions and a comparison of city and rural life. The plot of the play centers on the escapades of Charles Marlow, a rich young man who finds it easy to be frightened by ladies from higher social classes but who acts boisterously among those he perceives to be beneath him. His father sends him to Mr. Hardcastle's estate so he might pursue his daughter Kate. Mr. Hardcastle is a rich country squire. There are many odd couplings and a happy ending as a result of mistaken identities, miscommunications, and a number of hilarious occurrences. When it was initially produced, "She Stoops to Conquer" was a financial and critical success, and it is still one of the plays in the English language that is played the most. It is noteworthy for its blend of broad physical humor and smart language, as well as for its generally favorable depiction of the lower classes.
