De Segur, a French writer of Russian descent, wrote numerous books, the most famous of which was Les Malheurs de Sophie (Sophie's Misfortunes).
Sterrett did the illustrations were done when she was only 19 years of age, this being Sterrett's first book. She is often referred to as the "female Kay Nielsen," a reference to the renowned Danish fairy tale illustrator. Sterrett contracted Tuberculosis and managed to complete illustrations for Natahiel Hawthorne’s
Tanglewood Tales (1921) and her own interpretation of
Arabian Nights (1928) before passing on, aged just 31.
