Quarrelsome Lovers tells the story that a famous opera actress, Bai Guiying, is tired of the artistic life of playing according to circumstances. Therefore, she leaves the stage resolutely despite her mother's opposition. In depressions, she makes acquaintance with the civil servant, Wang Yuhe. Despite pressure from her mother, she marries Wang Yuhe and then gets rid of all excessive magnificence with him. Unfortunately, Wang Yuhe loses his job and cannot find any other job. Therefore, he leads Guiying back to his hometown in the countryside. Although the couple is careful and rigorous, they are despised by Wang's brother and sister-in-law.
