Bachelor Thesis from the year 2021 in the subject Law - Criminal process, Criminology, Law Enforcement, grade: 2:1, Nottingham Trent University (Nottingham Trent university ), course: Criminology , language: English, abstract: The fast pace of social media’s progression into modern society has let up for the integration of crimes on these platforms. As social media is adapting and growing constantly, it is also important to acknowledge the crime infiltrating and taking advantage of this popularity. With hate crimes being one of the major crimes penetrating the platforms, this research intends to discuss the means of which hate crimes appear via social media through a literary analysis outlining the motivating factors and harm caused to individuals. Once the crimes have been outlined the project will go on to discuss the relevant legislation and theory to progress into recommendations to how to move forward with the scope that social media does and in turn prevent hate crimes from occurring on social media. With the conclusion resulting in the need for up-to-date legislation as the current is not adequate in policing online hate crimes, a modernisation is needed to compete with the flow of hate crime on social media.
