Beschreibung
Bachelor Thesis from the year 2023 in the subject Agrarian Studies, grade: 80.00, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, language: English, abstract: This research project investigates the challenges and economic ramifications of urban and peri-urban agriculture (UPA) within the scope of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) campus. As a microcosm of urban development, the KNUST campus provides a unique setting to explore the intricate dynamics of UPA in an educational institution. The study identifies and analyzes the challenges that KNUST's UPA initiatives encounter, including soil quality, water resources management, regulatory barriers, and resource allocation within a confined urban environment. The study was conducted between 18th July 2023 and 24th September, a total of 6 respondents were interviewed across six farms, five of which were situated in Brunei-KNUST campus and one situated at Ayiduase. In assessing the economic impact of UPA at KNUST, we employ a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data analysis with qualitative insights. The case study of KNUST's UPA initiatives serves as a valuable example for other urban and peri-urban areas facing similar challenges and opportunities. By sharing lessons learned and best practices, this research aims to inform decision-makers, campus administrators, and local stakeholders about the potential of UPA to drive sustainable urban development and improve the economic well-being of the community.
