Beschreibung

Dr. Evelyn Reed, a Portland speech pathologist, receives a cryptic summons to the Necropolis of Aaru, a shimmering city of silence where the last Sphinx, Kephri, guards the gateway between worlds.  His riddles, the source of the necropolis’s protective magic, are faltering, a stutter disrupting their ancient power.  Intrigued and unsettled, Evelyn journeys to this land of myth and magic, accompanied by her pragmatic archaeologist friend, Shawna.
In Aaru, Evelyn confronts a case unlike any she’s encountered. Kephri, carved from sun-kissed sandstone, exudes timeless wisdom, yet his voice, even when fragmented by the stutter, echoes with the weight of forgotten empires.  Evelyn’s initial assessment yields nothing physiological; the disruption is magical, linked to the very riddles he speaks. As she delves deeper, guided by the young initiate Cody, a startling realization dawns: the stutter intensifies when Kephri looks at her.
Ancient laws forbid interaction between the Sphinx and outsiders, but Kephri finds himself drawn to Evelyn’s quiet strength and gentle smile.  His forbidden feelings disrupt the magic flowing through him, tangling his words like a knotted thread.  Meanwhile, Shawna’s explorations unearth whispers of a rising darkness, the Devourer, awakened by the weakening of Kephri’s riddles.  This ancient entity craves the power within the necropolis and threatens to unleash chaos upon the world.
Evelyn, caught between her duty to heal Kephri and the growing threat of the Devourer, discovers the truth: Kephri’s riddles are imbued with his deepest emotions. His affection for Evelyn creates a dissonance, disrupting the magic. To heal the stutter, Evelyn must help Kephri confront his forbidden feelings, a task that risks violating sacred laws and amplifying the very danger she seeks to avert.
As the Devourer's shadow deepens, Evelyn realizes the interconnectedness of Kephri’s emotional state and the necropolis’s fate.  She devises a daring plan, a fusion of science and ancient lore, to reshape Kephri’s riddles, imbuing them with the truth of his love. During the annual Riddle Ceremony, with the Devourer’s presence palpable, Kephri steps forward. His voice, initially trembling, gains strength as he speaks, his riddles now imbued with his love for Evelyn. The magic surges, pushing back the encroaching darkness.
The necropolis is safe, but a new dilemma arises. Kephri is now bound to Evelyn, and she to the necropolis.  Evelyn must choose: return to her world, severing the newly forged connection, or embrace her love for Kephri and a life forever entwined with the ancient world.  In a poignant climax, Evelyn chooses to stay.  Their love story, a testament to vulnerability and acceptance, becomes a new legend whispered through the desert winds, a tale of a speech therapist who healed not just a voice, but a heart, and in doing so, saved a world.
